CTE and Work-Based Learning (WBL) provides students with opportunities for instruction in both academic and occupational skills, career exploration, and guidance in identifying employment and educational goals.  Students have the opportunity to connect what they learn in school with work-site application to enable a smooth transition into the work force and/or education beyond high school.

Congrats to Robert Mornan and Irvin Cortes, BHSVA students who praticipated in the NYC SCA Summer Intership Program. The Students participated in a six week course where they got the opportunity to intern with major companies in the construction field and learned how to conduct themselves in a business setting. The students explored different career fields in an Architectural, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) firms.

Congratulations to the BHSVA students who sucessfully completed the 2015 CTE Summer Scholars Program
CTE Summer Scholars www.ctesummerscholars.org - An intensive seven week program for Career and Technical Education (CTE) students studying IT and Graphics with paid work experience in their field.
Students participated in a full-day, interactive conference with representatives from the Mayor's Center for Youth Employment and other civic leaders to identify specific problems related to youth employment then conducted research to map out the problem and created formal project plans, under the guidance of a professional business consultants, a college sociology professor, and a PMI-certified project manage.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) at the Bronx High School for the Visual Arts

 
What is CTE?
  • It is an educational program that specializes in a specific skilled trade, occupational training and career preparation.
 
BHSVA specializes in Graphic Design
  • Graphic Design is a technical subject that uses different computer technology to produce artistic and professional visual communication design and presentations.
 
What will the students learn?
  • Mastery of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Professional communication skills (verbal and written)
  • “Dress for Success”

  • Mastery of web-based tools such as Prezi, Google Docs and Wix (website building)

What is Work-Based Learning?
  • CTE students will be placed in design and art internships where they will learn first hand industry-working experience.  Students may work up to 15 hours per week with a possible small stipend.  Students are required to maintain a B average and excellent attendance.
 
Will students receive any specific certificate?
  • Regents Diploma with Academic Certification in Art
  • Pass all their Regents Exams
  • Earned 10 credits in Art
  • Passed the New York City Art Comprehensive Examination
 
  • New York State Career Technical Certificate in Graphic Design
  • Passed all required courses in CTE sequence
  • Passed Final Exit Examination in Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop
  • Passed the New York City Art Comprehensive Examination
 
What is the Art Comprehensive Examination?
  • After three consecutive years and 6 credits in art, each student is eligible to take an Art Regents exam (Art Comprehensive Examination). The Art Regents exam is offered in portfolio class.
 
Graphic Design Requirements and Standards
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.1 (76%)
  • Maintain excellent attendance (90%)
  • Student may not be chronically late for period 1 or cut/”miss” period 1 because they are late for school.
  • Student must be well behaved and have few or no discipline referrals.
  • Act and behave like a professional (in all classes)
  • Be respectful to others    
  • Follow rules and guidelines    
  • Complete assignments and meet deadlines and work hard   
  • Be open to new experiences, ideas and challenges

  • Knowing graphic design techniques, ideas and skills are helpful in any business or career because this design knowledge will help a person to create their own marketing materials (logo, website, business card, brochure, poster).All businesses need marketing.
  • Graphic design businesses also have other jobs that do not require the person to be creative. This would include: sales people, accountants, lawyers, office managers, administrative assistants, computer science and human resources.
