English Department Curriculum Overview

At BHSVA, our English Language Arts (ELA) program is grounded in the HMH Into Literature curriculum.

Designed to develop critical reading, writing, and communication skills, our curriculum guides students through engaging, diverse texts while fostering a lifelong appreciation for literature and language. Each grade level builds on the previous, ensuring a comprehensive and vertically aligned experience.

To graduate from high school, students must earn a total of 8 ELA credits.

Grade 9

Foundations of Literature and Composition

Students explore a diverse array of literary genres, including short stories, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Emphasis is placed on:

  • Analyzing literary elements and author’s craft
  • Writing literary analysis and argumentative essays
  • Building vocabulary and grammar through contextual learning
  • Developing close reading and annotation strategies

Grade 10

World Literature and Analytical Writing

Grade 10 focuses on literature from around the world, promoting cross-cultural understanding and empathy. Key areas include:

  • Comparative literary analysis
  • Rhetorical analysis of nonfiction texts
  • Research writing and proper citation
  • Speaking and listening skills through discussion and presentations

Grade 11

American Literature and Argumentation

Students examine pivotal works in American literature, tracing historical and cultural themes. This course emphasizes:

  • Argumentative writing and persuasive techniques
  • Analyzing foundational U.S. documents and speeches
  • Preparing for college-level writing and SAT-style assessments
  • Synthesizing multiple texts for deeper analysis
  • Regents English Language Arts

Grade 12

Contemporary Literature and College Readiness

The senior year curriculum centers on contemporary voices and themes while preparing students for post-secondary success. Instruction includes:

  • Thematic units exploring identity, justice, and global perspectives
  • Writing personal narratives and college essays
  • Conducting independent research projects
  • Practicing academic discussion and debate
